LLF: Hi, Juelie! Tell us who you are and more about your business!
HH: I'm Juelie Gish, the owner and artist behind Humble Hands. I like to tell couples and companies that I'm your new creative besties! Whether you need live painting or engraving, or need some new stationery or signage, I want to help. I do watercolor artwork, murals, chalk wall installations and more!
LLF: How would you describe your brand and your work?
HH: My brand is very authentic to me. I love Jesus, my family, my dogs, and art. That shines through with the work that I do, the content I post, and the conversations I get to have with clients and friends. I'd say my work is playful with fine art touches and thoughtful color palettes. It definitely depends on the project as well. I can shape my style around a client's needs pretty well!
LLF: What led you to go into business for yourself, and how did you get started in the wedding and event industry?
HH: I wasn't really trying to start a business. In college, I had a lot of sorority sisters pay me for crafty things, and it turned into a side hustle of sorts. When I realized that I was actually making good money, Humble Hands started taking shape. I started in the wedding industry in 2015 when I did watercolor invitations for my friend's wedding. With the first set, I was hooked. I had already been designing watercolor greeting cards so I knew the jump to invitations would be easy. For corporate clients, I had someone refer me for a calligraphy service on gift bags. They turned out beautifully, then once again...hooked.
LLF: Where do you draw inspiration from?
HH: Honestly, a lot of my inspiration comes from time spent with the Lord. I also find that my frequent go-to's for practice are flowers, animals, and fun architecture. I'm inspired by color and how those colors make me feel. I've found that sometimes I don't know how to feel about something, then I start painting, and feel completely healed from what I didn't know was even bothering me.
LLF: What is your favorite part about owning a small business?
HH: That's SUCH a hard question because I have a lot of favorite parts. When I think about it, truly my favorite part is seeing how my artwork or designs change a person's life. If I'm painting a first-kiss portrait at a wedding, I know that the couple will cherish that froze such a fleeting moment for them to admire forever. For my social stationery, I hope that my cards bring joy, laughter, and comfort to the receiver. I guess my favorite part is interacting with all of my clients and making a genuine connection- person to person. That's what it's all about anyway.
LLF: If you could give advice to other aspiring small business owners, what would it be? What is the best advice you've received as a small business owner?
HH: Some of the best advice that I've gotten and would like to pass along is that you need to be investing in your business. Instead of thinking that the courses you want to take are expenses, think of them as investing in bettering your craft. I'm part of a small group mastermind and the community of women I've found to support my business growth and personal growth is invaluable...and I'm investing in my business.
I also want people to know not everyone will like what you are producing, and that's okay! Your ideal clients exist...you just need to keep being yourself, and they'll find you!
Another piece of good advice is "Done is better than perfect." Stop procrastinating because you think something isn't ready for the world yet. Launch it, and then refine as you go.
LLF: What are you top 3 favorite small businesses?
HH: I love this question, but legit can't narrow it down to 3!
LLF: If you had to choose one song to play when you walked into a room, what would it be and why?
HH: This is absolutely the best and hardest question of the whole lot. I would have to say "That's Who I Praise" by Brandon Lake. A close second is a throwback: "Represent" by Lecrae.
